Word Adventures USA
Location-based family literacy and learning experiences.

The Challenge
Families often want meaningful learning time together, but the places they already visit — parks, historic sites, downtowns, shorelines, museums — rarely come with language and literacy support. Learning materials tend to live in classrooms rather than in the places children are curious about.
The Solution
Word Adventures USA builds location-based learning experiences that pair real places with vocabulary, literacy, and inquiry prompts. Instead of a worksheet, a family gets a reason to look closely, talk, read, wonder, and record what they noticed in the place they are standing.
The Audience
- Families learning together outside of school
- Homeschool communities planning place-based study
- Educators designing field experiences
- Museums, libraries, and community sites extending their programming

Working tool
Publicly available as a browser-based experience and continuing to expand through iteration and educator and family feedback.
Learning & design principles
What guides the decisions.
Place is the text
Language grows when it is attached to something a child can see, touch, and question. Locations anchor vocabulary in direct experience.
Talk before task
Prompts are written to start conversation between adult and child rather than to test recall.
Low-friction for adults
An adult should be able to lead an experience with no preparation, no printing, and no specialized background.
What It Can Do
- Place-connected literacy and inquiry prompts
- Vocabulary and language building tied to real settings
- Family-friendly sequences that work in a single visit
- Extensions for homeschool study units and field trips
- Browser-based access with no installation
Why Browser-Based Matters
Families use the experience on the device already in their pocket, at the location itself. No app store, no account setup at the trailhead, no lost handouts.
Browser delivery also means we can revise quickly: an improvement reaches everyone the next time they open the link.
