Internship Companion
Documentation support for early childhood education interns.

The Challenge
Internship documentation is often spread across paper logs, email threads, and separate reflection assignments. Interns spend effort on assembling paperwork that could be spent on practice, and instructors receive records that are difficult to review consistently.
The Solution
Internship Companion gives interns one browser-based place to log hours, document progress across the internship, and complete reflective journaling. The structure of the tool mirrors what the internship already requires, so documentation becomes a routine rather than an end-of-term scramble.
The Audience
- Early childhood education interns and student teachers
- Course instructors and internship supervisors
- Teacher preparation programs
Current Stage
Working tool
In use as a browser-based tool for early childhood education internship documentation, with continued refinement based on user feedback.
Learning & design principles
What guides the decisions.
Reflection is part of the work
Journaling sits alongside hour tracking so reflection is a habit of practice, not a separate assignment.
Reduce administrative load
Every field exists because the internship requires it. Nothing is collected for its own sake.
Clear for both sides
Interns can see what remains; supervisors can read documentation in a consistent form.
What It Can Do
- Hour logging across the internship term
- Progress documentation over time
- Structured reflective journaling prompts
- A single organized record instead of scattered files
- Browser-based access from placement sites
Why Browser-Based Matters
Interns document from a phone or laptop between activities at their placement, without installing software on a program or center device.
Browser delivery also means we can revise quickly: an improvement reaches everyone the next time they open the link.
